You can increase or refine your hit rate by using the truncation mark “*”. You may prefix “*” and/or append “*” to a word or part of a word. Without using “*” it is easy to overlook relevant holdings as a result of searching the catalog only with (a) single clear-cut keyword(s). This applies also to searches where you are vaguely familiar with the name of an author or a title. In this case you just type a substring, or part of a word, add “*” and click the search button.
Example:
If you type the keyword “Sicherheit” in a search field under “Title”, add “*” and search the catalog, you will get all entries containing the word “Sicherheit” (52 hits) as a one word unit or as a sub-word of a compound beginning with this keyword, such as “Sicherheitspolitik”, “sicherheitspolitisch”, “Sicherheitsvertrag” and so on.
Without the truncation mark “*”, the catalog will only search for the keyword “Sicherheit” as a one word unit and would therefore yield fewer hits concerning “Sicherheit” (20 hits).
